Key Concepts:
2.1 describe the levels of organisation in organisms: organelles, cells, tissues, organs and systems
Levels of Organisation
๐ Introduction
Living organisms are made of different structural levels, starting from the smallest units (organelles) and building up to whole systems.
Each level works together, forming a hierarchy.
๐ Think of it like Lego blocks – tiny pieces (organelles) combine to make bigger structures (cells โ tissues โ organs โ systems โ organism).
๐ฌ 1. Organelles
Tiny structures inside cells that carry out specific functions.
- Nucleus โ controls cell activities, stores DNA.
- Mitochondria โ site of respiration, releases energy.
- Chloroplasts โ photosynthesis (plants only).
- Ribosomes โ protein synthesis.
๐งฉ 2. Cells
The basic unit of life. All living organisms are made of cells.
Each cell type is adapted for its function.
- Root hair cell โ absorbs water/minerals.

- Red blood cell โ carries oxygen.
- Muscle cell โ contracts for movement.
๐งต 3. Tissues
A group of similar cells working together to perform a function.
- Xylem tissue โ transports water in plants.
- Phloem tissue โ transports sugars.
- Muscle tissue โ contracts to cause movement.
Nervous tissue โ transmits electrical impulses.
๐ฅ 4. Organs
Different tissues working together for a specific task.
- Heart โ pumps blood (muscle + nerve + blood vessel tissue).
- Leaf โ photosynthesis (palisade tissue, xylem, phloem, guard cells).
- Stomach โ digestion (muscle, glandular, epithelial tissue).
โ๏ธ 5. Organ Systems
A group of organs working together to carry out a big function.
- Digestive system โ breaks down food + absorbs nutrients.
- Circulatory system โ transports substances around the body.
- Respiratory system โ gas exchange.
- Nervous system โ communication and response.
- Vascular system (plants) โ transport of water (xylem) + food (phloem).
๐ Summary Table – Levels of Organisation
| Level | Definition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Organelles | Structures inside cells with specific functions | Nucleus, mitochondria |
| Cells | Basic unit of life | Root hair cell, red blood cell |
| Tissues | Group of similar cells working together | Xylem, muscle tissue |
| Organs | Group of tissues working together | Heart, leaf, stomach |
| Systems | Group of organs working together | Digestive system, vascular system |
Hierarchy: Organelles โ Cells โ Tissues โ Organs โ Systems.
Organelles = tiny structures inside cells (nucleus, mitochondria).
Cells = smallest living units.
Tissues = similar cells working together.
Organs = tissues combined for a job.
Systems = organs working together.
๐ Always think: tiny โ bigger โ biggest structure in living things.
