IB Physics 2025 Revision Resource- Exam Style Questions and Notes

IBDP Physics HL -First assessment 2025

IBDP Physics SL -First assessment 2025

IB DP Physics 2025

Assessment for New IB Physics 2025 ,  will only sit two external examinations.

Paper 1A includes multiple-choice questions on the syllabus.

paper 1B includes data-based questions that are syllabus related, addressing all themes.

Paper 2A includes data-based questions from unfamiliar contexts and short-answer questions.

Paper 2B includes extended-response questions that focus on holistic knowledge and understanding of a wide range of syllabus content, skills, concepts and understandings.

IB Physics 2025 Revision Resource- Conceptual Learning

IB Physics Conceptual learning

The Physics  New curriculum emphasizes concept-based teaching and learning . This approach fosters a deeper understanding of key concepts and their applications.

Conceptual understanding is therefore an outcome of a non-linear, ongoing process of evolving understandings, adapting previous understandings, and identifying and dispelling misconceptions. It consists of making connections between prior and new knowledge to construct and build an awareness of this network of knowledge.

Outcomes of a concept-based approach

A concept-based approach fosters critical thinking, enabling students to:

  • Identify real-world examples of concepts.
  • Organize, reflect on, modify, and expand their knowledge network.
  • Apply concepts to existing and future knowledge.
  • Utilize conceptual understanding as a scientific thinking tool for predicting outcomes, justifying conclusions, and evaluating knowledge claims

Structure of the New syllabus IB Physics 2025

The Physics  syllabus is structured to promote concept-based learning and teaching, focusing on three central concepts: energy, particles, and forces. These concepts are integrated throughout the syllabus, appearing in each of the themes

There are five organizing themes in the physics syllabus.
A. Space, time and motion
B. The particulate nature of matter
C. Wave behaviour
D. Fields
E. Nuclear and quantum physics

Distinction between IB Physics SL and IB Physics HL

The IB DP Physics course is offered at two levels: Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

SL Course:

  • Provides a fundamental understanding of physics.
  • Requires 150 recommended teaching hours.
  • Covers core concepts and skills.

HL Course:

  • Requires a deeper understanding and knowledge of physics.
  • Provides a solid foundation for university-level study.
  • Requires 240 recommended teaching hours.
  • Covers additional content that is conceptually more demanding and explored in greater depth.

The distinction between SL and HL is based on both breadth and depth. HL students are expected to have a broader understanding of the subject and delve deeper into specific topics. This increased depth and breadth require students to make more connections between different areas of the syllabus.

IB Physics 2025 Sample Questions

Question-A.1 Kinematics HL  Paper 1

A car travels clockwise around a circular track of radius R. What is the magnitude of displacement from X to Y?

A.1 Kinematics HL Paper 1

A. \( R \frac{3 \pi}{2}\)

B. \(R \frac{\pi}{2}\)

C. \(R \sqrt{2}\)

D. \(R\)

▶️Answer/Explanation

Ans:C

The displacement from point X to point Y is a chord of the circle and can be represented by the line connecting points X and Y.

A.1 Kinematics HL Paper 1

Question- B.1 Thermal energy transfers  HL  Paper 2

A solid piece of chocolate of mass \(82 \mathrm{~g}\) is placed in a pan over fire. Thermal energy is transferred to the chocolate at a constant rate. The graph shows the variation with time \(t\), of the temperature \(T\) of the chocolate. At 6.0 minutes all the chocolate has melted.

B.1 Thermal energy transfers HL Paper 2

The specific heat capacity of solid chocolate is \(1.6 \times 10^3 \mathrm{~J} \mathrm{~kg}^{-1} \mathrm{~K}^{-1}\).

(a) Show that the average rate at which thermal energy is transferred into the chocolate is about \(15 \mathrm{~W}\).[3]

(b) Estimate the specific latent heat of fusion of chocolate.[2]

(c) Compare the internal energy of the chocolate at t = 2 minutes with that at t = 6 minutes. [2]

▶️Answer/Explanation

Ans:

Reads change in temperature to be \(45-31\) OR 14 ‘ \(\mathrm{C} V\)
$
Q=0.082 \times 1.6 \times 10^3 \times 14=1.84 \times 10^3 \alpha \mathrm{J} n
$
$
P=\frac{1.84 \times 10^3}{2.0 \times 60}=15.3 \approx 15 \ll W_n
$

b.\(\begin{aligned} & Q=15.3 \times 4.0 \times 60=3.67 \times 10^3 \ll \mathrm{J} » \\ & L=\frac{3.67 \times 10^3}{0.082}=4.5 \times 10^4 \alpha \mathrm{J} \mathrm{kg}^{-1} »\end{aligned}\)

c.Internal energy is greater at \(t=6 \mathrm{~min} O R\) internal energy is lower at \(t=2 \mathrm{~min} O R\) internal energy increases «as energy is added to the system»
Because kinetic energy «of the molecules» is the same AND potential energy w of the molecules was increased / OWTTE
