KS1-4: Key Stages in the UK Education System

KS1, KS2, KS3, and KS4 refer to the Key Stages in the English education system. They divide a child’s education into different phases.

KS stands for Key Stage.

It’s a term used in the English education system to divide a child’s schooling into different stages. There are four main Key Stages:

KS1: Years 1 and 2 (ages 5-7)
KS2: Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 (ages 7-11)
KS3: Years 7, 8, and 9 (ages 11-14)
KS4: Years 10 and 11 (ages 14-16)

SATs stands for Standard Assessment Tests. They are standardized assessments used in English primary schools to measure pupils’ progress at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (Year 6).
Note: There are no SATs for Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) or Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11).

The primary assessments used in UK primary schools are:
Statutory Assessments

Phonics Screening Check: This takes place in Year 1 to assess children’s ability to read words and decode.
Key Stage 1 (KS1) Assessments: While these are becoming less formal, they are used to assess children’s progress at the end of Year 2 in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Multiplication Tables Check: This is a timed test taken by Year 4 pupils to assess their fluency in multiplication tables.
Key Stage 2 (KS2) Assessments (SATs): These are formal tests taken at the end of Year 6 to assess children’s attainment in English reading, writing, grammar, punctuation, and spelling, as well as mathematics.
