Key Concepts:
2.30 understand that bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder
Bile – Production & Storage
📝 Introduction
Bile is not an enzyme but a digestive fluid that helps in fat digestion and maintaining conditions for enzymes to work.
🔑 Key Points
- Produced by: Liver
- Stored in: Gall bladder
- Released into: Duodenum (first part of small intestine) through bile duct
⚙️ Functions of Bile
- Emulsification of fats
Breaks large fat droplets into tiny droplets.
Increases surface area for lipase to act on → faster digestion. - Neutralisation of stomach acid
Food from stomach is very acidic.
Bile is alkaline → neutralises acid → provides alkaline pH for enzymes (like lipase & trypsin) to work properly.
📊 Summary Table
Feature | Bile Role |
---|---|
Production | Made in liver |
Storage | Gall bladder |
Release site | Duodenum |
Main actions | Fat emulsification + Acid neutralisation |
⚡ Quick Recap
Made in liver, kept in gall bladder.
Breaks fats into droplets (emulsification).
Neutralises acid → enzymes work better.
Not an enzyme itself, but vital for digestion.
