Structure 1.3.4 — Sublevels and Atomic Orbitals

Structure 1.3.4 — Sublevels and Atomic Orbitals

Main Energy Levels and Sublevels

Each main energy level \( n \) is divided into sublevels: s, p, d, and f.

  • s-sublevel: holds 1 orbital (max 2 electrons)
  • p-sublevel: holds 3 orbitals (max 6 electrons)
  • d-sublevel: holds 5 orbitals (max 10 electrons)
  • f-sublevel: holds 7 orbitals (max 14 electrons)

The order of sublevel energy increases as follows:

$1s < 2s < 2p < 3s < 3p < 4s < 3d < 4p < 5s < 4d < 5p < 6s…$

Shape and Orientation of Orbitals

1. s orbital:

  • Shape: spherical
  • Orientation: only one possible orientation (symmetric in all directions)
  • Present in all main energy levels (\( n = 1 \) and above)

2. p orbitals:

  • Shape: dumbbell-shaped
  • Three orientations: along the x, y, and z axes → called \( p_x \), \( p_y \), and \( p_z \)
  • Present from the second energy level (\( n = 2 \)) onwards

3. d orbitals:

  • Shape: cloverleaf-shaped (four of them) and one with a donut-shaped ring
  • Five orientations: \( d_{xy} \), \( d_{yz} \), \( d_{xz} \), \( d_{x^2 – y^2} \), and \( d_{z^2} \)
  • Present from the third energy level (\( n = 3 \)) onwards

4. f orbitals:

  • Shape: complex and multi-lobed structures
  • Seven orientations: e.g., \( f_{xyz} \), \( f_{z^3} \), etc.
  • Present from the fourth energy level (\( n = 4 \)) onwards

Example

How many electrons can be held in the third energy level (n = 3), and which sublevels are present?

▶️Answer/Explanation
  • Sublevels in n = 3: 3s, 3p, 3d
  • s → 1 orbital = 2 electrons
  • p → 3 orbitals = 6 electrons
  • d → 5 orbitals = 10 electrons
  • Total = \( 2 + 6 + 10 = 18 \) electrons

Answer: 18 electrons

Example

State the number and shape of orbitals in the p-sublevel. Describe their orientations.

▶️Answer/Explanation
  • There are 3 orbitals in the p-sublevel: \( p_x \), \( p_y \), \( p_z \)
  • Each is dumbbell-shaped and oriented along one of the three Cartesian axes
  • Each orbital holds 2 electrons → total of 6 electrons in p-sublevel

Example

Identify the total number of electrons that can be accommodated in all the d orbitals within the fourth energy level.

▶️Answer/Explanation

The d sublevel always has 5 orbitals.

Each orbital holds 2 electrons → \( 5 \times 2 = 10 \) electrons total.

So, within the fourth energy level, the 4d sublevel can accommodate 10 electrons.

Example

Which sublevels are available in the fourth main energy level, and how many orbitals do they contain in total?

▶️Answer/Explanation

For \( n = 4 \), the available sublevels are: 4s, 4p, 4d, and 4f.

  • s → 1 orbital
  • p → 3 orbitals
  • d → 5 orbitals
  • f → 7 orbitals

Total orbitals: \( 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16 \) orbitals

Maximum number of electrons = \( 16 \times 2 = 32 \) electrons
